Stories are created by being told. In telling narratives, stories are invented, passed on, changed and adapted. They wander through the world, are passed between persons and easily transcend man-made boundaries. In doing so, the story’s form changes, the narrative gains some details and loses others, while the focus and theme shifts. Stories contribute to the creation of a common identity and sense of belonging. However, telling stories is not limited to the words they contain. The impact of the spoken narrative is complemented by the performative elements the narrator utilizes to communicate meaning— gestures and intonation. The audience, in turn, participates in the story-telling process through its reactions to the narrative. This tradition of performing narratives remains strong in many sub-Saharan African countries and has been recently revitalized in the form of spoken word. Spoken word is a highly active and an artistically extremely exciting, yet sparsely documented, scene.
The Spoken Word Project aims to find ways of documenting this oral art form and increase its visibility in the region as well as abroad. The goal is to develop an online-platform format which captures both the textual and performative elements of a spoken word narrative as well as the participation and reaction of the audience. The question is how spoken word can live, and even thrive, in the internet— the new online world. The project thus serves to increase the links between the fairly isolated artists of the spoken word movements in different cities and countries of sub-Saharan Africa whilst demonstrating the significance of spoken word on the continent and thus creating an increased global awareness for this art form.
The innovative feature of this project is that it links the traditional art of storytelling with one of its modern manifestations— spoken word. By organizing a pan-African festival spanning across several cities, networking and artistic exchange is promoted amongst African spoken word artists.
The kick-off of this project will be an event with selected South African spoken word artists in Johannesburg during May 2013. All performances will be recorded, while an independent jury critiques the entries and awards two to three winners. Their contributions are uploaded onto the online-platform in video format. The project then moves onto the next city. Here, the best entries of the previous event are shown to the invited artists in preparation for the event and these artists then include an element of one of those narratives in their own performance. This element can consist of an object, theme or character present in one of the previous narratives. The transfer of this element from one artist, one place to the next constitutes the core of this project. A common thread is thereby created throughout the many narratives of the project, thus creating a greater, interwoven, branched out, multi-dimensional and therefore non-hierarchical narrative— a metaphor for the creation and dissemination of traditional stories, and hence for storytelling itself.
Although the main languages of the spoken word project are English and French, there is certainly room for local languages and dialects (and Portuguese). Appropriate subtitles will be added to the videos. In cases where the language used changes from one city to the next, bilingual artists (and subtitles) will bridge the language gap. The stops planned for sub-Sahara Africa will include the following cities: Johannesburg, Antananarivo, Nairobi, Kampala, Luanda, Yaoundé, Bamako and Abidjan. The time between events will be around 4 weeks and the starting date will be in mid-/end-May.
Le Projet « Spoken Word » (Création Orale) – Des histoires qui traversent l’Afrique
Les histoires sont créées lorsqu’elles sont racontées. En racontant des récits, des histoires sont inventées, transmises, modifiées et adaptées. Elles traversent le monde, passent d’une personne à une autre et transcendent facilement les frontières artificielles. En voyageant, l’histoire change de forme, le récit reçoit de nouveaux détails et en perd certains autres, tandis que l’objet principal et le thème de l’histoire changent. Les histoires contribuent à la création d’une identité commune et donnent un sentiment d’appartenance. Cependant, le fait de raconter des histoires ne se limite pas aux mots qu’elles contiennent. L’impact d’un récit oral est complété par les éléments performatifs utilisés par le narrateur pour communiquer- à travers les gestes et l’intonation. A son tour, le public participe à la narration à travers ses réactions au récit. Cette tradition de récits interprétés demeure très présente dans de nombreux pays de l’Afrique subsaharienne et a été récemment relancée sous la forme de Spoken Word. Le Spoken Word est une scène très active et très passionnante artistiquement, mais encore peu documentée.
Le Projet Spoken Word vise à trouver des moyens pour documenter cette forme d’art oratoire et d’accroitre sa visibilité dans la région ainsi qu’à l’étranger. L’objectif est de développer une forme de plateforme en ligne qui reflètera à la fois les éléments textuels et performatifs d’une création orale ainsi que la participation et la réaction du public. La question est de savoir comment le Spoken Word peut vivre, et même se développer à travers internet – le nouveau monde en ligne. Le projet permet ainsi d’accroitre les liens entre les artistes assez isolés des mouvements de Spoken Word dans diverses villes et pays de l’Afrique subsaharienne tout en démontrant l’importance du Spoken Word sur le continent et créer ainsi une prise de conscience mondiale pour cette forme d’art.
L’aspect novateur de ce projet est qu’il relie l’art traditionnel de la narration avec l’une de ses formes modernes – le Spoken Word. En organisant un festival panafricain qui va s’étendre sur plusieurs villes, la création de réseaux et les échanges artistiques seront promus parmi les artistes Africains de Spoken Word.
Le lancement de ce projet fera l’objet d’un évènement avec des artistes de Spoken Word Sud Africains sélectionnés et qui se tiendra à Johannesburg en Mai 2013. Toutes les représentations seront enregistrées, tandis qu’un jury indépendant jugera les participants et récompensera deux à trois lauréats. Leurs contributions seront alors mises en ligne sur la plateforme au format vidéo. Le projet se déplacera alors sur la prochaine ville. Ici, les meilleures performances de l’événement précédent seront projetées aux artistes invités en préparation de l’événement et ces artistes à leur tour incluront un élément d’un de ces récits dans leur propre performance. Cet élément pourrait être un objet, un thème ou un personnage présent dans l’un des récits précédents. Le transfert de cet élément d’un artiste à un autre, d’une ville à une autre constituera le cœur de ce projet. Un fil sera ainsi créé, reliant plusieurs récits, et créant un récit plus grand, entrelacé, ramifié, pluridimensionnel et ainsi non hiérarchique et sera une métaphore pour la création et la diffusion d’histoires traditionnelles et donc pour la narration elle-même.
Bien que les principales langues du projet Spoken Word soient l’Anglais et le Français, les langues et dialectes locales seront les bienvenues (dont le Portugais). Des sous-titres appropriés seront ajoutés aux vidéos. Dans des cas où la langue utilisée change d’une ville à la suivante, des artistes (et sous-titres) bilingues permettront de combler le fossé entre les langues. Les arrêts prévus pour l’Afrique subsaharienne se feront dans les villes suivantes : Johannesburg, Antananarivo, Nairobi, Kampala, Luanda, Yaoundé, Bamako et Abidjan. Le laps de temps entre les évènements sera d’environ 4 semaines et le lancement aura lieu en mi-/fin Mai.
