Calling all writers, artists and creatives! Do you want to be part of an exciting new project exploring the relationship between digital media platforms, multimedia production and storytelling? Do you have an image you want to share with the world and a story you think it might tell? Do you have an idea for a short story, or a story you’d like to adapt into audio? Then you are exactly who we are looking for!
Bakwa is excited to announce that it will be holding an innovative workshop for artists, writers and translators in partnership with Grapevine. Grapevine is a WhatsApp-based platform that seeks to expand the ways in which we connect to literature and art. Grapevine connects print media to digital audio: you send a picture of a book to the Grapevine WhatsApp number, software determines which book it is, then sends you a short audio story, which arrives in your WhatsApp conversation and can be easily shared.
Over the course of the next three months, Grapevine will be holding three workshops in Bristol (UK), Yaounde (Cameroon) and Sao Paulo (Brazil) to develop the first set of specifically-commissioned Grapevine image-to-audio stories. We are looking for cutting-edge artists, designers, and writers to participate. Each workshop will accept six participants, who will work together and individually to develop stories and/or poems (in English, French, pidgin, and Camfranglais or other languages!), and images that will be recorded and uploaded to the Grapevine platform. Following each workshop, we will select at least one of the projects for a professional commission.

Bakwa a le plaisir d’annoncer qu’il organise, en collaboration avec Grapevine, un atelier novateur pour les artistes, les écrivain.e.s et les traducteur.ice.s. Grapevine est une plateforme qui se sert de WhatsApp afin d’accroitre les moyens par lesquels nous accédons à la littérature et à l’art, en associant les médias imprimés à l’audio numérique : vous envoyez l’image d’un livre au numéro de Grapevine sur WhatsApp, le logiciel reconnaît le livre, puis vous envoie, dans le fil de votre conversation WhatsApp, une nouvelle en format audio que vous pouvez facilement partager.
Ainsi, au cours des trois prochains mois, Grapevine organisera trois ateliers (un à Bristol, au Royaume-Uni ; un à Yaoundé, au Cameroun ; et le dernier à Sao Paulo, au Brésil) dans le but de développer une première série d’œuvres “image-à-audio” spécialement commandées. Nous sommes donc à la recherche d’artistes, de dessinateur.ice.s et d’écrivain.e.s avant-gardistes qui voudraient y participer. Chaque atelier comprendra six participant.e.s qui travailleront ensemble et individuellement à l’élaboration de nouvelles et/ou de poèmes (en anglais, en français, en pidgin et en camfranglais ou en d’autres langues !) ainsi qu’à la conception des images associées. Les œuvres issues de ces activités seront enregistrées et téléchargées sur la plateforme de Grapevine. À l’issue des ateliers, les projets sélectionnés feront l’objet d’une commande.
Pour participer à l’atelier de Yaoundé, qui se déroulera le 1er avril 2020, veuillez nous envoyer un court texte dans lequel vous manifestez votre intérêt pour cet atelier (150 mots), un échantillon de votre travail (300 mots ou une image), et une courte biographie (100 mots) par courriel à info@bakwa.org en indiquant en objet : ‘Atelier Bakwa/Grapevine’.
