Earlier this year, Yolanda Be Cool (an Australian band made up of Sylvester Martinez (aka Andrew Stanley) and Johnson “Durango Slim” Peterson) teamed up with DCUP on a cover of Manu Dibango’s “Soul Makossa”. This electronic dance music duo, whose name is a reference to a scene in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, scored an international chart-topping hit with the house smash “We No Speak Americano” in 2010. They made their commercial recording debut with the Afro Nuts EP on the Australian independent label Sweat It Out in 2009.
Their cover of “Soul Makossa”, a song released as a single in 1972 by Cameroon saxophonist and songwriter, Manu Dibango, follows a long tradition of about 58 adaptations, samples and covers of Manu Dibango’s song by musicians such as Michael Jackson, Kanye West, Rihanna and Milli Vanilli. Contrary to most of the other versions, Yolanda Be Cool’s cover has a penchant towards club culture.
