Today marked her first day at a new school, where she would be repeating the Form 3 year. Consistently among the top ten students in her class, she had missed the second and third term examinations last year, and was now forced to repeat the year. What was the point of all her discipline and punctuality if she was destined to repeat? Perhaps she should have skipped classes and enjoyed herself instead. Would she be the oldest in the class? She would turn sixteen in January.
Her stomach churned. What if the other kids in the new school stared at her amputated leg? What if they did not want to be her friends? What if she fell in front of them?
She tried to shake off these thoughts, but they clung.
“Iya Adekunle, you’ll be late for school! Come and eat your breakfast!” Mamun’s cheerful yet firm voice called from the kitchen. When Mamun used Iya’s full name, Iya knew she needed to respond. She took a deep breath, pushed the sheets aside and hopped into the kitchen, her crutches clattering on the floor. She sat at the table, but barely touched her food. She picked up her mother’s phone, scrolling through pictures absentmindedly. Mamun noticed and took the phone, tucking it into the pocket of her kabba gown, still rumpled from the night’s sleep.
“Mamun,” Iya whispered, avoiding eye contact, “I miss my old school and friends: J’ai peur, Mamun. I am afraid of the new school. What if I don’t make any friends?”
Mamun stooped beside Iya, cupping her face in her hands. “Remember what I taught you,” she said softly. “Repeat after me: ‘I am blessed. I am beautiful. I am special.’”
Iya blinked back tears, her voice trembling as she repeated the words, each phrase a small shield against her fears. Mamun wrapped her arms around Iya in a tight hug, kissing her forehead. “You are all those things, my baby.”
The sound of the school bus honking outside broke into the moment. Iya grabbed her school bag, feeling its weight with a mix of excitement and anxiety. Her crutches, with their silver frame and pink handles—her favourite colour—were a part of her identity that she was learning to embrace. As she hopped outside, Mamun rushed after her with a sticker of a golden crown, which she placed on one of the crutch handles. It was Mamun’s way of telling Iya she was a princess. Iya smiled, whispered a thank-you, and then made her way to the bus. Her mother hurried back into the house and re-emerged with a pack of snacks, stuffing them into Iya’s backpack. “Try to eat something on your way to school.”
Though Mamun watched, Iya chose not to look back, concentrating on her steps. Walking to the bus took longer for her than it did for the neighbourhood kids, who sprinted ahead. Once inside, she apologised to the other passengers for the delay, forcing a smile. She settled into a seat near the door, placing her bag on the adjacent seat. As other students boarded, they passed her by, leaving her alone for the entire forty-minute ride. Who introduces themselves by apologising?
Settling in, Iya watched the other students laugh. Memories of her old friends flooded her mind, and a wave of longing washed over her. The bus ride felt endless, the chatter of other children ringing in her ears like a foreign language. As the vehicle navigated through traffic, the sounds of hawkers faded into the background of her thoughts. When the bus finally dropped her off at school, Iya took a deep breath and whispered a quick prayer: “God, help me.”
As she approached the school grounds, her eyes scanned the playground. It buzzed with energy, groups of students mingling among brightly coloured play equipment and patches of green grass. Iya paused to adjust her grip on the crutches, feeling the weight of her schoolbag.
Seeking refuge, she retreated to a corner beneath the staircase of the administrative block, the cool shade providing comfort as she settled into a chair, her back against the wall. She pulled her knee close, with her crutches resting beside her. The sounds of laughter and chatter echoed around her, then faded as she dozed off.
The bell signalling the end of first the period rang, and Iya woke up—she had been hidden beneath the staircase for an entire lesson. She emerged from her hiding spot to go find her class.
The school buildings consisted of four separate blocks painted yellow with fresh burgundy trim. One block housed the high school, two blocks served the secondary school, and the block where she had concealed herself accommodated the administrative offices and library.
The labels were unclear, so she walked in, just like the other new students trying to find their way. A student bumped into her as he hurried past, making her stumble. Iya’s cheeks burned as the boy laughed and ran off. Anger bubbled within her, a feeling she had been struggling to manage for months.
Striving to stand taller, she propelled herself forward, planting her crutches firmly with each step. More children rushed past her, their laughter ringing in her ears, yet no one seemed to notice her.

Toujours parmi les dix meilleurs élèves de sa classe, elle a manqué les examens des deuxième et troisième trimestres l’année d’avant et était donc obligée de redoubler. À quoi servaient toute sa discipline et sa ponctualité si elle était destinée à redoubler ? Elle aurait peut-être dû sécher les cours et profiter de la vie à la place. Serait-elle la plus âgée de la classe ? Elle aurait seize ans en janvier.
Elle avait l’estomac noué. Et si les autres enfants de la nouvelle école fixaient sa jambe amputée ? Et s’ils ne voulaient pas être ses amis ? Et si elle tombait devant eux ?
Elle essayait de chasser ces pensées, mais ces dernières s’accrochaient.
« Iya Adekunle, tu vas être en retard à l’école ! Viens prendre ton petit-déjeuner ! » La voix joviale mais ferme de Mamun résonnait depuis la cuisine. Lorsque Mamun utilisait le nom complet d’Iya, celle-ci savait qu’elle devait répondre. Elle prit une profonde inspiration, repoussa les draps et bondit vers la cuisine, ses béquilles claquant sur le sol. Elle s’assit à table, mais ne toucha presque pas à son repas. Elle prit le téléphone de sa mère et fit défiler les photos d’un air pensif. Mamun le remarqua et prit l’appareil, le glissa dans la poche de son kaba, encore froissé après une nuit de sommeil.
« Mamun, murmura Iya, en évitant tout contact visuel, mon ancienne école et mes amis me manquent. J’ai peur, Mamun. J’ai peur de la nouvelle école. Et si je ne me faisais pas d’amis ? »
Mamun se pencha vers Iya et prit son visage entre ses mains. « Souviens-toi de ce que je t’ai enseigné, dit-elle doucement. Répète après moi : Je suis bénie. Je suis belle. Je suis spéciale. »
Iya retenait ses larmes, la voix tremblante, répétant ces mots, chaque phrase formant un petit bouclier contre ses peurs. Mamun l’étreignit et l’embrassa sur le front. « Tu es tout cela, mon bébé. »
Le klaxon du bus scolaire dehors interrompit ce moment. Iya attrapa son cartable, sentit son poids et éprouva un mélange d’excitation et d’anxiété. Ses béquilles, avec leur monture argentée et leurs manches roses — sa couleur préférée — faisaient partie de son identité qu’elle apprenait à accepter. Alors qu’elle se précipita dehors, Mamun se hâta de la rejoindre avec un autocollant à l’effigie d’une couronne dorée, qu’elle colla sur l’un des manches de sa béquille. C’était sa façon de dire à Iya qu’elle était une princesse. Elle sourit, lui murmura un merci puis se dirigea vers le bus. Sa mère se précipita dans la maison et revint avec un paquet de friandises qu’elle fourra dans le sac à dos de sa fille. « Essaie de manger quelque chose sur le chemin de l’école. »
Bien que Mamun la regardait, Iya préféra ne pas se retourner et se concentra sur ses pas. Arriver jusqu’au bus lui prenait plus de temps qu’aux autres enfants du quartier, qui filaient à toute allure. Une fois à l’intérieur, elle présenta ses excuses aux autres passagers pour le retard, en esquissant un sourire forcé. Elle choisit un siège près de la porte et posa son sac sur celui d’à côté. Lorsque les autres élèves montèrent à bord, ils passèrent devant elle sans la remarquer, la laissant seule pendant les quarante minutes que dura le trajet. Qui se présente en s’excusant ?
Une fois installée, Iya regardait les autres élèves rire. Les souvenirs de ses anciens amis envahirent son esprit, et une vague de nostalgie la submergea. Le trajet en bus lui semblait interminable, les bavardages des autres enfants résonnant dans ses oreilles comme une langue étrangère. Alors que le véhicule se frayait un chemin dans la circulation, les cris des marchands ambulants s’estompaient dans le fond de ses pensées. Lorsque le bus la déposa finalement à l’école, Iya prit une profonde inspiration et murmura une petite prière : « Dieu, aide-moi. »
Alors qu’elle s’approchait de l’enceinte, son regard balaya la cour de récréation. L’endroit débordait d’énergie, des groupes d’élèves se mêlaient parmi les équipements de jeux aux couleurs vives et les parcelles d’herbe verte. Iya s’arrêta pour ajuster sa main sur les béquilles, sentant le poids de son cartable.
Cherchant refuge, elle se retira dans un coin sous l’escalier du bloc administratif, l’ombre fraîche lui procurant un certain réconfort alors qu’elle s’installait sur une chaise, le dos contre le mur. Elle replia son genou, ses béquilles posées à côté d’elle. Les rires et les bavardages résonnaient autour d’elle, puis s’estompaient à mesure qu’elle s’assoupissait.
La cloche signalant la fin de la première heure sonna, et Iya se réveilla — elle était restée cachée sous l’escalier pendant toute la durée du cours. Elle ressortit pour aller retrouver sa classe.
Les bâtiments scolaires se composaient de quatre blocs séparés peints en jaune avec de récentes finitions bordeaux. Un bâtiment constituait le lycée, deux autres servaient à accueillir le collège, et celui où elle s’était cachée abritait les bureaux administratifs et la bibliothèque.
Les plaques n’étaient pas claires, alors elle est entrée, tout comme les autres nouveaux élèves qui cherchaient leur chemin. Un élève l’a bousculée en passant précipitamment à côté d’elle, la faisant chuter. Les joues d’Iya s’empourprèrent tandis que le garçon riait et s’enfuyait en courant. La colère bouillonnait en elle, un sentiment qu’elle s’efforçait de maîtriser depuis des mois.
Cherchant à se tenir plus droite, elle se propulsa en avant, plantant fermement ses béquilles à chaque pas. D’autres enfants passaient en courant devant elle, leurs rires résonnant dans ses oreilles, mais personne ne semblait la remarquer.
